St. Joseph Council Designated Hospital is determined to provide high quality services which are accessible and affordable to all people. It provides both Out Patient and In-Patient Services in the Fourteen (14) departments. The hospital has a functional HFGC for supervision of all hospital functions and an active HMT for accomplishing all hospital functions at their respective departments.

There is a vigorously Quality Improvement Team (QIT) which spearheads the Working Improvement Teams (WIT) as per department for the quality assurance of all departmental activities within St. Joseph CDH according to SOPs.

Our Background

St. Joseph Hospital is owned and managed by the Registered Trustees of the Sisters of Our Lady of Kilimanjaro in the Catholic Diocese of Moshi. The hospital was started in 2001 as a Health Centre and in 2004 the Centre was raised to a fully functional Hospital. The hospital operates within the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Community Development, Gender, Elderly, and Children in Tanzania and the Regulations of Catholic Diocese of Moshi. Its serve the population of 237,715 people (115,767 males and 121,948 females).

The bed capacity of the hospital is 170 beds, while patients admitted per day range from 25-30 patients and outpatients department attendance per day from 150-250 (100-150). The Hospital has several departments including: - Out-patient, In-patient, High Dependent Unit (HDU), Dialysis Unit, Operating Theatre (OT), Physiotherapy, ICT, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Counseling, Care and Treatment (CTC) for HIV/TB, Medical, Surgical, Obstetrics &Gynecology, RMNCH+A, Radiology, Administration, Pediatric, Medical records, Dental and other supportive departments like kitchen/canteen, laundry and store and Mortuary Service.

The hospital in 2009 signed an Agreement to provide services as a Council Designated Hospital. Therefore, it is the Council Designated Hospital for Moshi Municipality and it serves as a referral hospital for 21 administrative wards, having 60 villages.

Our Late Sr. Dr. Urbani Marseli Lyimo was born in 14th March, 1952 at Karmeli Parish and died in 31st May,2020 at St. Joseph Hospital -Soweto in Catholic Diocese of Moshi- Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania.

She managed to make the hospital move from Health Centre to District Council Designated Hospital of Moshi Municipality. Through her endless efforts and courage, she managed to make St. Joseph Hospital look beautiful as it is today.

We are collaborating with Moshi Municipal council and congretion to the sisters of Our Lady Kilimanjaro, Catholic Diocese of Moshi- Kilimanjaro Region with the aim to become a global standard health care service providers offering precise, timely and affordable diagnostic and therapeutic solutions to all people.

Hospital Profile

St. Joseph Hospital is owned and managed by the Sisters of Our Lady of Kilimanjaro in the Catholic Diocese of Moshi. The hospital started in 2001 as Health Centre and in 2004 became a Voluntary Agent not for profit. It operates within the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MOHCDGEC) of Tanzania and the Diocesan of Moshi. In 2009 the hospital signed an Agreement to provide services as a Council Designated Hospital with registration number 036207.

It is situated in South West Moshi, about 5 km from Moshi bus stand, along Khambaita Road, which extends from Arusha Road at Memorial junction. Being a CDH it serves the citizens of entire 21 administrative wards of Moshi Municipal Council, Moshi Municipality is the capital of Kilimanjaro region in the North Eastern Tanzania. The Municipality is situated on the lower slopes of a dormant volcanic Kilimanjaro, which is the highest mountain in Africa.

Strategy for Improvement of St. Joseph Hospital Health Services

St. Joseph CDH has the following strategies to improve the quality and safety of provided health services, in line with National Health Policy, Health Sector Strategic Plan IV- MTR 2017 /2021 Programs and initiatives as well as our local needs..

  • Improving health care services by ensuring adequate and sustainability of medicines,medical equipment, medical & diagnostic supplies in the CDH.
  • Strengthening of the hospital financial system by improving HMIS by using the eHMS.
  • Capacity building to health care worker especially in emergency preparedness and disasters.
  • Addressing of human resource for health crisis.
